I discovered Irvington for myself soon after relocating to Indianapolis in 1990. It was thanks to spotting Guitartown while riding the bus back and forth to my bookstore job in Washington Square Mall. Many of you know Bill Shaefer’s wonderful shop from one of it’s three incarnations in the Irvington Shoppes. I was fortunate enough to spend most of my 20s working alongside Bill, Greg Lindholm, Frank Dean, & Rob Fenter at the old shop. If you were friend of the store, we’ve probably met. I may not remember your name, but there’s a good chance I remember your instruments I worked on.
Guitartown is gone, but music is still a big part of life in Irvington. You can find it at The Irving Theater’s weekly open stage (above, left), hidden here and there in our neighborhood-wide First Friday celebrations, warm-weather acoustic jams over at the Red Barn (above, right), concerts at Playground Productions, pub music at the Snug, and performing on stage at our nationally known annual Halloween Festival. And probably a hundred other events I’m forgetting.
